We are seeking volunteer judges for the upcoming National Qualifier Tournament for the state of Montana, to be held at Capital High School Feb. 13-14, 2009.
Hundreds of volunteer hours are needed to make this event a success. Judges will evaluate students from around the state in acting, oratory and a variety of debate events. Just one hour (or more) of your time will be much appreciated.

An optional judges’ clinic will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10 in the Capital High School library

News and upcoming events

Important dates

Jan. 24: Cross Town concessions-Carroll College

Jan. 30-31: AA State Tournament-Billings, MT

Feb. 13-14: National Forensic League Montana State Qualifier tournament

TBA: End of Season Banquet

CONCESSIONS

Our team was awarded concessions for the boys’ and girls’ crosstown basketball games on Saturday, Jan. 24. Money earned from concessions helps defer the costs of traveling by paying for a minimum of one meal per student at each tournament. The team voted unanimously to bid for this concession and there is an expectation that all students will participate if they are able.

STATE TOURNAMENT

Rounds for the State Tournament will start at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30. The team will leave by charter bus at 7 a.m. SHARP. We will be staying Friday night at the Billings Hotel and Convention Center. We will arrive home between 10:30 p.m.-midnight on Saturday. If you are willing to supply treats for the bus trip, please contact head coach JoAnne Sherwood.

NATIONAL QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT, February 13-14th, 2009.
Helena Capital was chosen as this year’s host for this prestigious statewide event. Parental support and involvement are critical to successfully running this tournament. We simply can’t do it without you. What’s needed?

*JUDGES, JUDGES, and more JUDGES. Beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Friday and going through Saturday afternoon we will be needing judges. Each preliminary round requires 3 judges with the semifinal and final rounds requiring 5 judges. We will also need judges for Student Congress sessions. Electronic signup available at:

http://apps.puredev.net/judge/

Please talk to your family, friends, and neighbors about judging. It’s interesting, educational, and a way to be involved in the community. We will be providing an optional training and information session at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9 in the Capital High School Library.

*Student Concessions. If you are willing to chair this and/or work concessions, please contact us. We will also need donations of food. All money raised from concessions goes directly to support your sons and daughters in speech and debate.

*Tournament Volunteer Concessions. Parents are needed to handle food for the tournament volunteers (judges, tab room workers, coaches). The District pays for the supplies but we need someone to help me coordinate and oversee this part of the tournament.

END OF THE YEAR AWARDS BANQUET
We are looking for a location to hold this special recognition event for our students. Please let us know if you have an idea of a location where 40-50 can gather. We’ve outgrown the beautiful Mountain West Conference room so if you have any ideas or suggestions please let us know.

Powell results

Hey everybody -
Great work in Powell this weekend!
We had some impressive results, competition-wise, and each and every one of you has something to be proud of in that arena, whether you took home a trophy or not. Most of all, you were wonderful to travel with: kind, conscientious, helpful, fun….thanks for being such great students.

Here are the details:

Out of 44 extemporaneous speakers, Claire McGuire won first place, earning perfect scores in her final round; Sarah Willcockson was a semifinalist. Also, Harlan Reidmohr was ranked 14th of 44 in preliminary rounds. And this was Harlan’s and Sarah’s first tourney as extempers - way to go!
With her persuasive speech, WenHui Wu was a semifinalist in original oratory.
In debate, Capital’s junior varsity policy team of Sarah Kirby and Chris Schneider took second place, and were awarded seventh and fourth speaker honors, respectively.
Capital High School closed out novice Lincoln-Douglas debate, with Carly Ryan and Amanda Creasia beating out two debaters from Billings Skyview to tie for first place in the semi-final round. In preliminary rounds, Ryan and Creasia were named first and second speaker respectively.
Varsity Lincoln Douglas debater Sadie Viergutz earned third place and was named eighth speaker during the tournament. In preliminary LD rounds, Dan Moran had a winning record and Pat Fischer was named third speaker overall.
In team public forum debate, Mary Beall and Becca Boslough made it to semi-finals with a 5-1 record and Boslough was named third speaker overall.

Missoula tournament - and much, much more.

This weekend, Dec. 12-13, we will attend the Garden City Invitational in Missoula. It is supposed to get VERY VERY cold this weekend, so bring a real coat, a blanket for the bus, etc.
The hotel does offer a continental breakfast and, as always, we will pay for Saturday night’s dinner on the way home.

Attending coaches: JoAnne, Brian, Emily, Kristin

Schedule
We will leave after second period, so about 10:15 a.m.
Remember that you can leave your stuff in the referee room near the gym if you need to.
Return time: 10 p.m. ish, Saturday night.

Lodging

Other important news:
For information on Powell and NFL, please see the new pages I have started for these big tournaments at right.

Christmas party
The Christmas party will be hosted by Sadie Viergutz, Sunday, Dec. 21.
Exact time is TBA but we’re thinking early evening, like 4-6.
The event will be a potluck, so send an email to Emily Donahoe if you can bring a main dish, beverage or dessert. I will post the list here as I get it so that we don’t all bring the same thing.
We will also have a fun, optional white elephant gift exchange. All you need to do is bring a wrapped gift (the goofier, the better) to participate.
Alumni are invited! Tell your friends from the team who are back from college for the holidays to join us.

Fundraising update
*Coffee is here! Please pick up at least two coffees and a mug from JoAnne to sell. Each item is $10. We only ordered what you said you could sell, so it shouldn’t be too difficult.
*Concessions: We have secured two nights of concessions, on Thursday, Dec. 17 and a crosstown game late in January.
Please post to this email if you can be there on Dec. 17, from 3:45 p.m. to close.
*Valentine’s Day fundraiser raffle is in the works, to be held in conjunction with NFL. And there will be prizes!
